Implant success used to be perceived only as the placement of an implant in available bone, therefore leaving form, function and quality of life relegated to a secondary role. The use of tri-dimensional diagnostic imaging techniques, sophisticated grafting, sinus elevation and distraction osteogenesis techniques, immediate and progressive loading, improved prosthetic interfaces, screw alloys and all ceramic abutments are only a few examples of the currently available armamentarium that has contributed in making implant dentistry a predictable and highly successful treatment modality. On the other hand, when analyzing implant failure, it is difficult to single out one particular cause. Implant failure may be due to biological, mechanical or a combination of these factors. The purpose of today’s presentation is to discuss the management of biomechanical implant failure based on critical analyses of the literature.
